Al-Jazari (1136-1206) is a Kurdish inventor from CizĂ®ra Botan during the Artuqid dynasty. He designed and constructed a number of automatic machines, including kitchen appliances, musical automats powered by water, and the first programmable humanoid robot. Al-Jazari’s robot is a boat with four automatic musicians that is designed to float on a lake for entertainment at royal drinking parties. His mechanism consists of a programmable drum machine with pegs that can be moved into different positions to play a variety of rhythms and drum patterns.
