Ahmet Öğüts artistic practice is many-faceted and reflected in the wide range of media he uses, extending from the artist book and drawing to video and photography, installation and performance. According to Öğüt, the artistic idea determines the choice of medium. His own flexible use of media thus corresponds to the diversity of issues he wishes to address. Many of his projects take a humorous look at everyday phenomena and actions, which the artist ties to a larger political context by thematizing history and its impact on social conditions.
At KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Öğüt presents Ground Control, a major installation first developed in Istanbul in 2007. Combining elements of sculpture and installation, it reduces KW s vast main hall on the ground floor to two dimensions by covering the 400-square-meter floor in thick, outdoor asphalt. Destabilizing expectations by bringing the materials of the street indoors, Ground Control puts exhibition visitors on unfamiliar terrain. And while formally the work might at first seem reminiscent of Minimal or Conceptual Art, for Öğüt his gesture looks less toward these artistic movements than toward the possibility of his own brand of political critique. In Turkey, asphalt laying was a means of homogenizing the country in its rapid quest to modernize, metaphorically covering over some of its diverse history in the process. Today, road building in rural areas still serves not only to open up the remoter parts of the country, but also to bring them under government control, purportedly to improve security. Asphalt thus becomes a political tool for the demonstration of government power. Öğüt transfers this inscription of power in public space onto the exhibition hall, highlighting the political dimension of a seemingly innocuous substance like asphalt and raising awareness of how power is displayed and maintained.

The work is a set of large photos showing Ögüt placing official-looking signs in several outdoor locations around St. Louis. The signs say "Warning this area is under 23 hour video and audio surveillance." In the photos, he stops with his tools at various places, mostly public, and hangs the signs without being bothered. It may reference the way that we accept the constant surveillance under which a city dweller lives, or else point out the privacy or mischief that can be achieved outside of the modern grid, in that one precious hour, whenever that might be. The Swinging Doors 2009 - 2018
original riot shields
90 x 52,5 cm (each)

A swinging door made of two original riot shields. The shields, typically used by police to block protesters during demonstrations, here become doors that physically join two rooms. This intervention subverts the original function of the object and thus activates direct relation between the viewer and the work: the viewers ‘force’ this device into a method of passage rather than inhibition and in doing so compute an action of resistance.

Presented jointly by the Broad MSU and the Istanbul-based art organization Protocinema, Day After Debt comprises a series of sculptures designed and produced by Ahmet Öğüt, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Dan Perjovschi, Martha Rosler, Superflex, and Krzysztof Wodiczko. Located in interstitial spaces throughout the museum, these sculptures function as collection points for public contributions to The Debt Collective, a student-debt canceling initiative launched by Strike Debt's Rolling Jubilee. In addition to alleviating debt, this collective creates a platform that aims to offer those struggling to repay student loans more possibilities for organization, advocacy, and resistance.
Öğüt's coin operated "Anti-Debt Monolith" is a steel minimal work referencing the fictional advanced artifacts of non-human origin built by an unseen extraterrestrial species that appear in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). The work responds to coin donations with an audio recording of the growth of student debt in the past 10 years. Other works in the exhibition include Haghighian's collection box composed of shredded U.S. currency and Perjovschi's "Bag It!," a transparent plastic bag accompanied by a humorous hierarchy of donation levels.
Superflex makes use of an upside down graduation cap as an "honor system" money collector, while Rosler's participation is comprised of text and graphics applied to a coin vortex wishing well. Wodiczko presents "Debtor Staff," a new version of his equipment for strangers and the estranged that is an evolution of its predecessor, the "Alien Staff" (1992). Taking advantage of new mini-projector technology, "Debtor Staff" facilitates the recording and display of the public's accounts of individual and collective debt.

Day After Debt is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and is curated by Mari Spirito, Founding Director of Protocinema.

Support for this exhibition is provided by SAHA, Istanbul; Haro Cumbusyan; Bilge Ahmet Öğüt; Marty and Rebecca Eisenberg; and the Broad MSU's general exhibitions fund.

As part of the project, in collaboration with art lawyer, Sergio Munoz Sarmiento, Öğüt developed a Letter of Agreement between the artists and potential future owners to raise funds for the Debt Collective.
donwload the agreement here:

Agreement of Transfer of Work of Art
This Agreement form has been drafted by Sergio Munoz Sarmiento, a New York-based Art Lawyer, in discussion with Ahmet Öğüt, an artist and initiator of Day After Debt. This Agreement is expected to be used by any artist for the transfer and sale of a work of art that is specifically designed as a fundraising machine and sold to raise funds for Strike Debt to buy back Student Loans.
Strike Debt/Rolling Jubilee/Debt CollectiveThe goal of the Debt Collective is to create a platform by debtors and for debtors for organization, advocacy, and resistance. Organizing collectively offers many possibilities for building power against creditors. On Sept. 17, 2014, The Debt Collective was launched by The Rolling Jubilee, creating a platform for organization, advocacy and resistance by debtors. www.debtcollective.org

Special thanks to Michael Rush, Pelin Tan, Koray Duman, Suat Öğüt and Laura Hanna and Christopher Casuccio from Strike Debt.
