Je Vous Salue, Sarajevo (I Salute/Welcome You, Sarajevo), created in 1993, is a short video by Jean-Luc Godard offering a poetic reflection on the Balkan war. The piece centers on a haunting photograph by Ron Haviv, capturing a member of the Arkan Tigers kicking a Bosnian civilian in Bijeljina. Ahmet Ögüt revisits and reinterprets Godard’s work by integrating details from a 2015 photograph by Jack Shahine, taken in Rojava. Ögüt retains the original voiceover and text by Godard, incorporating subtle interventions through editing and voice cloning. In Shahine’s photograph, a woman is shown removing her black burka to reveal a colorful dress beneath to say that she is finally free! A gesture symbolizing her newfound freedom.
