The EyeWriter is an open-source eye-tracking device designed to help individuals who are disabled or nearly completely paralyzed to draw and communicate using only their eye movements. Ahmet Öğüt hand-wrote the EyeWriter’s DIY website link on $1 bills and dispersed them through "money showers" at random weddings in his hometown of Diyarbakır. By distributing this groundbreaking tool in such an unconventional way, he not only raised awareness about the EyeWriter project and issues of disability, but also questioned the accessibility of technological innovation.
In 2012, EyeWriter/DIY/arbakır received a Special Prize as part of the Future Generation Art Prize. Upon receiving the award, Öğüt donated the prize money to the Not Impossible Foundation—one of the founding supporters of the EyeWriter development team (Free Art and Technology, OpenFrameworks, and the Graffiti Research Lab)—to further support the project’s outreach and distribution to those in need.
Moving beyond traditional promotional methods and PR campaigns, Öğüt’s practice consistently explores alternative strategies for knowledge sharing, production, and funding within the arts.
